Man, 22, killed on Okanagan highway, trucker fails to stop at scene

A 22-year-old man is dead after being struck by a commercial vehicle on Hwy 6 on Thursday morning.

Police are now asking the driver to come forward.

Vernon North Okanagan RCMP say officers responded at 7:25 a.m. on Feb. 12, 2026, to reports of a deceased person lying in the eastbound lanes of Hwy 6 near the intersection of 27th Street.

Investigators determined the man was in the travel portion of the highway when he was struck by the cab section of a commercial tractor unit travelling eastbound. The collision resulted in fatal injuries.

Police say the semi did not remain at the scene.

“It is of the utmost importance that the police speak with the driver of the semi and we are urging them to come forward,” said Cpl. Tania Finn, media relations officer with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP.

Police are asking witnesses and anyone with dash camera footage from the area between the Science Centre entrance and 27th Street between 7 a.m. and 7:25 a.m. to contact investigators.

BC Highway Patrol, the RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstructionist Section, Vernon Fire Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services and the BC Coroners Service are involved in the investigation.

Police say the victim’s family has been notified and is receiving support from Vernon Victim Services.
