A pair of recent joint force operations (JFO) in the Okanagan conducted by the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) produced significant results.
In total, 15 commercial vehicles were taken off the road due to infractions, while officers also issued dozens of violation tickets and orders for inspection or repair.
Both operations happened along Hwy 97 – the first near Osoyoos on Feb. 26 and the second north of Summerland on March 7.

“Good operators are getting undercut by unsafe drivers who do not spend money on repairs and maintenance,” says Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, BCHP.
“Not only do JFOs make the roads safer immediately, they also encourage a level playing field for the bulk of commercial drivers who are following the law and taking pride in their work.”
From 36 checks near Osoyoos on Feb. 27, officers issued 10 violation tickets and 16 inspection or repair orders, while four commercial vehicles were removed from service.
From almost 60 checks north of Summerland on March 7, officers issued 37 violation tickets and 41 inspection or repair orders, while 11 commercial vehicles were removed from service.
The BCHP explains that during JFOs like these, vehicles are pulled over for more in-depth inspections when investigators suspect mechanical or safety issues.
As a result, statistics from these operations are not representative of the industry as a whole.
