Open burning now permitted in the Okanagan

The arrival of October will also bring the arrival of open burning season in the Okanagan.

The BC Wildfire Service says that category 2 and 3 open fires are now permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre as of noon on Friday, Oct. 2.

More information about what category 2 and 3 open fires are is available here.

In addition to open burning, the following equipment and activities will also be permitted when the bans are lifted:

• Air curtain burners
• Carbonizers
• Binary exploding targets
• Fireworks, as defined in the Fireworks Act of BC
• Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
• Controlled air incinerators

While the rescind of the prohibition applies to all areas in the Kamloops Fire Centre, local governments may still have their own restrictions in place and people are advised to always check with local authorities before lighting a fire of any size.

Anyone lighting a Category 3 fire must first obtain a burn registration number by calling 1-888-797-1717.
