Prince George RCMP thwart two bike thefts

Prince George RCMP played hero to two bike owners after thwarting two bike thefts on Tuesday.

According to police, at 8:15 a.m., RCMP received a report of a bike theft in progress at a convenience store near 15th Avenue and Central Street. The bike was left unlocked for a few minutes when it was stolen.

Frontline officers attended the area to search for the male suspect. A short time later, the bike was located and recovered by the owners near the corner of Winnipeg Street and 20th Avenue, but no suspect was found.

"This shows how quickly a bike thief can disappear from the scene of the crime, even when the crime is reported right away," said Cpl. Craig Douglass. "Within a few short minutes the thief, and the bike, can be halfway across town. The message here is that owners need to take steps to prevent their bikes from being stolen, even at a public place during daylight hours."

Later that day at 1 p.m., RCMP received another report of a bike theft in progress, this time from the 300 block of Victoria Street. A resident noticed a man cutting the cable lock off a bike, and ride away with it. Frontline officers responded and were given an accurate description of the suspect.

Within a few short minutes, two officers observed a man matching the description of the suspect who was riding a bike near 2nd Avenue and Dominion Street. The two officers activated emergency lights and attempted to stop the man. The man tried to flee but was captured by the officers.

After promising to appear for court on May 29th, the 54-year-old suspect was released. The Kona brand bike was returned to its owner.

"The Prince George RCMP already have had 28 bicycles reported stolen so far in 2019. Some were locked, some were not. Some were in sheds, some were taken from living rooms during a break & enter. No matter where you store your bike, it should always be locked with a high-quality bike lock."

This will be the fourth biking season that the RCMP will partner with Project 529 and their bike registry APP. In approximately two-thirds of reported bike thefts, the serial number is never provided, making it very difficult to determine a bike is stolen. The 529 Garage APP is FREE to use and keeps track of all your bikes essential information including make, model and serial number. For more information, go to www.project529.com.
