BC music teacher arrested amid allegations of sexual assault involving underage girls

A 22-year-old music teacher is facing charges after a series of allegations of sexual misconduct involving underage girls in the Lower Mainland.

Lamar Alviar teaches music out of LA Music Studio in North Vancouver and Coquitlam RCMP say there’s reason to believe he’s had “inappropriate contact” with young people around Metro Vancouver.

“The allegations involving Alviar include both students and non-students,” explained Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

“Police believe there is a strong likelihood that there are victims and witnesses who have not yet spoken to police.”

Described as a 5’8”, 150 lbs man with dark brown hair, hazel eyes and a slim build, Alviar has been released from custody under a number of conditions.

He’s not allowed to be alone with anyone who appears to be under the age of 16 and he can’t communicate with anyone under 16 through social media.

The LA Music Studios website says Alviar owns the music school and is a multi-instrumentalist who got his start teaching at the age of 16.

“He has received multiple scholarships, including one to Berkley and one from the TD Jazz Intensive, and has studied at Capilano University,” it reads.

“(Alviar) is a well developed session musician around the lower mainland and has toured internationally to the Philippines, New York, Las Vegas and across Canada.”

The RCMP is calling for anyone who may have been a victim of a crime involving Alviar to come forward and contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550.
