BC teacher disciplined after he 'forcefully disputed the validity of religion'

A B.C. secondary school teacher has been disciplined for professional misconduct following comments to students that were found to be inappropriate and insensitive.

The B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation says Jana Ronne admitted to the conduct as part of a consent resolution agreement dated April 9, 2026.

The incident occurred in November 2024 when Ronne confronted a group of students in a hallway after overhearing the word “pussy.”

During the interaction, Ronne raised her voice and asked students, “Do you think women are weak?” and told them: “Women can be stronger than men.”

Officials say the exchange escalated when a student denied using the word, and Ronne then "forcefully disputed the validity of religion," saying: “That is philosophy, I’m a scientist.”

The comments were heard by multiple students and were found to have created an uncomfortable environment, particularly for those from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

In a separate incident, Ronne used an example during a lesson that made a student feel singled out, and failed to recognize the student’s concerns when they tried to raise the issue afterward.

The school district had previously issued Ronne a four-day unpaid suspension and required her to take a respectful boundaries course.

Under the provincial agreement, Ronne will receive an additional one-day suspension and must complete further training on classroom environment and intercultural dialogue.

The commissioner found Ronne failed to create an emotionally safe learning environment and did not respect the diverse backgrounds of her students.
