BC teens able to escape car before it was hit by train

Fortunately, there were no injuries after a freight train hit a vehicle that became stuck on the tracks in the Mission area over the weekend.

Around 4 pm Sunday, a witness called 911 to report that a car had crashed on the train tracks at the Lougheed Highway and North Deroche Road crossing.

Police say the car reportedly took the corner too fast and collided with a train signal pole.

The 18-year-old female driver from Coquitlam and her 18-year-old passenger were able to get out of the car, but the vehicle itself wasn’t so lucky.

Just over a minute into the 911 call, the witness reported that a freight train had come through the crossing and struck the crashed car.

The train came to a stop after the collision and fully blocked the crossing, staying there until the wreckage of the vehicle was removed.

Once the vehicle was off the tracks, the train was deemed safe to continue operating and continued its journey.
