"I am so honoured to be recognized as a Barbie Role Model during Barbie's 65th anniversary celebrations alongside so many incredible people around the world. The significance of this aligns with my hope of inspiring young girls to never give up on the sport they love or anything they might want to achieve. I truly believe that by sharing the stories of women in sports, we can pave the way for future generations of athletes."
Other athletes chosen for the inspiration Barbie doll series include USA tennis player and Olympian Venus Williams, Australian football player Mary Fowler, French boxer Estelle Mossely, Alexa Moreno, a gymnast from Mexico, Rebecca Andrade, a gymnast from Brazil, Susan Rodriguez, a paratriathlon athlete from Spain, Federica Pellegrini, a swimmer from Italy and Ewa Swoboda, track and field sprinter from Poland.
“By recognizing athletes that have broken barriers for women in sports, Barbie hopes to help amplify the voices of women in sports to commemorate their accomplishments on and off the field,” said Mattel in their announcement.
In addition to highlighting women in sports, the 65th anniversary of Barbie will also see the release of dolls celebrating women around the world in storytelling.
The iconic Canadian singer/songwriter Shania Twain also has a Barbie in her likeness. Other women honoured alongside her include Viola Davis, Dame Helen Mirren, Kylie Minogue, Maira Gomez, Lila Avilés, Nicole Fujita and Enissa Amani.
"As a young girl, I was inspired by the essence of Barbie to create my own imaginative world and express myself through role play and storytelling," said Twain.
"I applaud Barbie for encouraging girls to create their own narratives and I'm honored to serve as a storyteller and role model during their 65th anniversary year. I hope other young girls are inspired to play out their dreams and recognize their limitless potential."
