Criminality not ruled out in weekend Hwy 1 crash that killed BC teen

The investigation is ongoing into a fatal weekend crash on Vancouver Island.

According to the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP), criminality can’t yet be ruled out in the crash that claimed the life of an 18-year-old Nanaimo man late Sunday night.

Police say he was the passenger in a black Audi S3 sedan that crashed and caught fire in the northbound lanes of Hwy 1 near Morden Road, just south of Nanaimo.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 19-year-old Nanaimo man who was driving the vehicle was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We need to know more about that second dark car, possibly a black Honda Civic, that was driving in close proximity to the black Audi in the moments before it crashed,” urged Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

McLaughlin says additional witnesses and relevant dash cam footage from the area “will be key” to learning exactly what caused the fatal crash.

Anyone with information that could help investigators in this regard is urged to contact the BCHP’s Duncan branch at 250-746-2751.
