Following extreme weather conditions knocking numerous cameras offline in the province this year, Drive BC is giving all residents the gift of sight.
According to Drive BC, people can now "know before they go," with the addition of 13 new cameras and 33 new views to its webcam network. These cameras will be especially important during the winter months so residents can see if their drive will be impacted by snow.
Two of the cameras are located in West Kootenay at the Kootenay Bay Ferry Terminal. Another one was put at the Needles Inland Ferry Terminal just off Hwy 6.
Those driving on the island can check the new camera on Hwy 19A at 17th Street in Courtenay. An additional cam was also installed at Menzies Hill on Highway 19A at the request of Campbell River residents.
The final camera Drive BC spoke about was located around the Golden Ears Bridge in between Langley and Maple Ridge. It is for up-to-date info on the connection across the Fraser River for the two communities.
All cameras will offer hundreds of real-time images throughout the province. There are currently 480 highway cams in BC, which provide 953 views.
"DriveBC maintains its network of existing cameras placed at strategic locations throughout the province," wrote Drive BC. "Webcam locations are assessed based on needs identified by residents, contractors or weather experts."
