Driver eventually comes forward after BC’s latest highway overpass strike

Yet another highway overpass strike in the Lower Mainland is under investigation.

The latest incident saw an eastbound flat deck truck with a crane boom strike a CP Rail overpass in Langley, on Hwy 1 between Glover Road and 232nd Street, at 2:52 pm Thursday.

According to the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP), the commercial driver stopped briefly before leaving the scene, which does not meet the legal obligation to wait for police or report the incident.

However, the driver remedied that almost immediately after the BCHP release was issued and has now come forward to police.

“The truck driver did not wait for police at the scene, which is the ideal, but subsequently reached out to police and is cooperating,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, BCHP.

“There was a small amount of visible damage to the overpass. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has made sure the overpass is still structurally safe.”

The overpass strike remains under investigation and the BCHP is working with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement to follow up on enforcement options.

In the meantime, anyone who witnessed the incident on Thursday afternoon is asked to reach out to the BCHP’s Burnaby division by calling 604-526-9744.
