A driver on Vancouver Island gave a BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) officer two separate reasons to impound his vehicle early last week.
The officer was driving on the Nanaimo Parkway near Mostar Road around 11 am on Monday, April 14, when a sedan sped by his unmarked police vehicle.
According to Insp. Adam Tallboy, the officer recorded the man’s vehicle as going 210 km/h, which was 120 km/h over the posted speed limit of 90 km/h.
“When the car was stopped, the driver said he was going to pick up his child,” Tallboy explained. “He then provided two breath samples, both of which had a reading of ‘fail’.”
The 31-year-old Nanaimo man was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition for impaired driving, which comes with an automatic 30-day vehicle impound.
He also received a $483 ticket for excessive speeding, an offence that would typically come with a seven-day vehicle impound if he didn’t already earn a longer one for driving while impaired.
“BCHP officers use a variety of ways to stop dangerous drivers, including the use of unmarked vehicles,” noted Tallboy.
“Anyone who makes the choice to drive at extreme speeds while they are impaired is a danger to every person who uses the road.”
