Elderly BC woman dead after crash that shut down Hwy 1 on Sunday

Police have confirmed that a crash in the Chilliwack area early Sunday afternoon was fatal.

The BC Highway Patrol is now looking for additional witnesses and dash camera footage to determine the exact cause of the fatal crash on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1).

Emergency crews responded to the incident shortly before 1 pm.

According to a police media release, a grey Ford Focus was approaching Prest Road in the eastbound lanes of Hwy 1 when it crashed and rolled into a ditch.

Sadly, the 74-year-old Agassiz woman behind the wheel, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

“At this early stage of the investigation, there are no indications of overt criminality,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin. “Police have already spoken to witnesses, but we would like to find more to ensure the investigation is appropriately thorough.”

Anyone with information regarding the fatal incident can contact the BCHP’s Chilliwack branch at 604-702-4039 and quote file number 2025-34778.

Hwy 1 was shut down eastbound for nearly six hours on Sunday due to the crash.
