A serious crash shut down the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) in Chilliwack for nearly eight hours on Wednesday.
The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) says a white Toyota Tacoma pickup and a black GMC Sierra pickup collided east of the Yale Road exit.
“Due to the speed of the collision, both vehicles rolled into a deep ditch at the side of the highway,” a BCHP release explained.
Unfortunately, the elderly Alberta man behind the wheel of the GMC was critically injured and was transported to hospital by an air ambulance.
According to the BCHP, his injuries are “serious and may be life-altering.”
The Toyota was being driven by an 18-year-old Chilliwack man and the BCHP says he suffered minor injuries in the accident.
Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the driving behaviour of the two vehicles leading up to the crash to come forward.
That includes people with relevant dash cam footage from the area at the time of the crash.
Witnesses can reach out to the BCHP’s Chilliwack branch by calling 604-702-4039.
