Another round of layoffs has hit Global News.
Broadcast Dialogue has now confirmed the layoffs, affecting 45 workers in British Columbia and Alberta, along with one more in Quebec, through both Corus Entertainment and Unifor.
According to the union, 26 of the 46 people who lost their jobs this week are journalists.
A statement from a Corus spokesperson called the changes “difficult but necessary” to create a more sustainable future for the company and its news division.
It’s similar terminology that has been used in previous rounds of layoffs at Corus.
“We are applying new workflows and ways of working, using the latest technology that will enable us to pave the way forward for the future of Global News,” the statement to Broadcast Dialogue continued. “As a result, certain roles within some stations have been impacted.”
Included in the layoffs is prominent and award-winning journalist Simon Little, who posted on Bluesky Wednesday night that it was “sad to see a quality team torn apart.”
“It’s incredible I somehow made it 10 years in the news (business) without being laid off, but my luck ran out today,” Little wrote.
Corus’ Q3 earnings report revealed that television revenue had declined 11% so far in the fiscal year, with net loss attributed to shareholders of $51.3 million.
