UPDATE: Escaped inmate from Surrey jail back in custody after citizen spots him in downtown Vancouver

(UPDATE: Jan. 14 @ 10:50 am) - An inmate who escaped from the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre covered a lot of ground in less than 24 hours, but is now back in custody thanks to a keen-eyed citizen.

According to the RCMP, Mustafa Sa'Ada was spotted by a member of the public around the intersection of West Hasting Street and Carrall Street in downtown Vancouver this morning, nearly 40 kilometres away from the jail.

Officers were on the scene quickly and arrested the 32-year-old.

The Surrey RCMP said that Sa'Ada made his escape as he was being processed for release on Thursday.

"Upon learning that his release conditions were not met and that he would in fact be staying at the Pretrial Centre, the man fled the reception area," a release explained.

Police offered their thanks to multiple agencies, along with the public, for helping with the search and getting Sa'Ada back into custody.


(Original story: Jan. 13 @ 2:10 pm) - The Surrey RCMP is on the hunt for an inmate who fled from the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre earlier this afternoon.

According to police, they were notified around 12:45 pm that Mustafa Sa’Ada had fled from the custody of correctional officers at the facility on 57th Avenue.

“Sa’Ada left on foot and was last seen heading south towards Hwy 10,” an RCMP release explained.

“Surrey RCMP along with Integrated Police Dog Services are actively searching for Sa’Ada, who is considered to be unlawfully at large.”

The escaped inmate is described as a 32-year-old Middle Eastern man who is 5’8” with a slim build.

At the time he fled jail, Sa’Ada was wearing a grey sweater, dark brown/grey pants and one white shoe.

Police said he has a “history of violent offences” and was in custody for robbery.

Anyone who spots Sa’Ada is told not to approach him and call 911 immediately.
