Medical event believed to have led to BC river death

It was a tragic start to the weekend in a Lower Mainland community after a man died in what police believe to have been a medical event on a river.

Just before 2 pm on Friday, Squamish RCMP received a report that a man had been located unresponsive where the Squamish River meets the Cheakamus River.

Based on initial information, the man was with another individual operating personal watercrafts on the river when the pair became separated.

The one rider located the other person unresponsive and being kept afloat by a personal flotation device.

The unresponsive individual was pulled to the shore. First responders and search and rescue members attended the scene and initiated life-saving measures, but the man did not survive.

Police believe the death to have been a medical event and the RCMP is working with the BC Coroner’s service to investigate the incident.
