Operator dies trapped inside piece of heavy equipment that fell into ocean at BC mill

A 30-year-old man is dead after a horrific workplace accident on Vancouver Island today.

Police responded to the fatal incident at Catalyst Pulp and Paper Mill in Crofton, between Victoria and Nanaimo, around noon today.

The RCMP says a piece of heavy equipment “fell into the ocean with its operator trapped inside.”

Canadian Coast Guard divers attempted a rescue with support from numerous first responders from the RCMP, BC Ambulance and local fire departments.

Sadly, the 30-year-old machine operator was unable to be revived.

Cpl. Alex Bérubé says the BC Coroners Service and WorkSafeBC are “conducting concurrent investigations into what led to this tragic outcome.”

No further details are available at this time.
