Several anti-gang programs receive millions in federal funding

The fight against gun and gang violence in B.C. is getting a cash injection, although, only certain regions will benefit.

B.C.’s provincial government announced that $5.3-million in federal funds will be directed towards six ”prevention and intervention” programs based in Abbotsford, the Cariboo-Chilcotin and the Capital Regional District surrounding Victoria.

Despite multiple shootings this year linked to organized crime in the Kamloops region, the Southern Interior was not tabbed for any additional funding.

In January, a Kamloops man was shot outside of a Super 8 Motel was been believed to be targeted by organized crime groups.

A month later, two people were shot on a residential Kamloops street in what investigators believe "were not a random incident."'

Over $1.2-million will towards youth involved and gang intervention programs in Abbotsford, while two Cariboo-Chilcotin youth programs will receive over $380,000.

The B.C. School Superintendents Association’s support for its high-risk vulnerable youth program will receive $580,000 and the Pacific Centre Family Services Association’s exploitation diversion program gets $450,000.

According to Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth, the funding is largely focused on youth intervention in an effort to “strike at the root of the problem” in B.C. neighbourhoods.
