Police say the suspect is a Surrey resident and remains in custody, but charges have not been laid in the case and no further information on the arrested person was provided.

The arrest comes after the boy was stabbed to death at around 11:40 pm Saturday just as tens of thousands of people were in the city for the Celebration of Light fireworks display.

Police have said the stabbing is being investigated as a murder, and the victim was also from Surrey.

Sgt. Steve Addison said previously that investigators believed there was a violent altercation near the Vancouver Law Courts at Smithe and Hornby streets, and a passerby found the injured boy who died in hospital early Sunday.
