Police are trying to identify a suspected youth who fled a traffic stop in North Vancouver in late August.
A BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) officer tried to stop the youth, who was riding an electric motorcycle, on Grand Boulevard around 6:10 pm on Aug. 28.
Instead of stopping, the rider accelerated through a stop sign before fleeing police. According to the BCHP, they appeared to have a low skill level and nearly collided with a car before speeding away.
The responding officer did not pursue, the BCHP noted, choosing to pull over immediately to prevent the young rider from harming himself or someone else.
“A lot of people are buying electric motorcycles that have no pedals, no signal lights, and no business on public roads,” said Sgt. Michael McLaughlin. “Your children might ‘promise’ to ride their machines responsibly and keep off public roads, but that’s not what’s happening.”
Police released video of the incident in hopes that the public can identify the rider, but blurred his face due to the requirements of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The rider is described as:
“We’re seeing an increasing number of young riders who attempt to bait police into a pursuit,” added McLaughlin. “This is stupid. Police are trying to keep everyone safe, and we need parents to start helping us out so we can prevent their kids from hurting themselves, or worse.”
Anyone with information that could help the BCHP advance this investigation is urged to call 604-892-6100.
