(UPDATE: March 23 @ 10:15 am) - The man who was arrested in connection to a shocking incident at the Granville Street skytrain station earlier this month has been charged, the Vancouver Police Department says.
Bradley King, 53, was arrested over the weekend and has now been charged with one count of assault in connection to the March 1 incident.
He has been released from custody until his next court appearance.
The VPD made a public appeal and released footage of the incident on March 18 and the footage was viewed by more than 80,000 people in its first 24 hours online.
“Late Saturday afternoon, an astute citizen who had seen the video on Instagram spotted the suspect walking near Granville and Georgia streets, and called 911," said Cst. Tania Visintin.
That tip from the public led police to King, who is believed to have had a brief verbal altercation with the 61-year-old victim outside the skytrain station before the alleged assault.
According to the VPD, King then followed the man into the station and proceeded to push him down a set of stairs before kicking him while he was on the ground.
(Original story: March 18 @ 2:50 pm) - The Vancouver Police Department is investigating a concerning incident at a downtown skytrain station that was all caught on surveillance footage.
It happened shortly before 5:30 pm on March 1 at the Granville Street skytrain station.
According to police, a 61-year-old man had a “brief interaction” with two men on Granville Street in front of the skytrain station.
“One of the suspects followed the victim to the SkyTrain entrance and pushed him down a flight of stairs,” explained a VPD release.
“As the victim was lying on the ground, the suspect allegedly kicked the victim before passersby intervened.”
Police are now looking for the suspect, who fled the scene before officers arrived.
He’s described as an Indigenous man in his 40s with short black hair and a slim build.
At the time, he was wearing a black rain jacket with a small white logo on the left chest, a white t-shirt, dark blue jeans, black running shoes and a Montreal Expos baseball hat.
“Given the time of day and the location of the incident, we know there were people in the area who witnessed this assault,” said Cst. Tania Visintin.
“We also know there will be people who recognize the man in this video, and we’re asking them for help to solve this crime.”
Fortunately, the victim only had minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
The VPD is urging anyone with information on this incident or the suspect to contact them at 604-717-4022.
