Vancouver restaurant at centre of ‘rat in soup’ controversy is closing its doors for good

In a New York minute, everything can change.

The owners of Crab Park Chowdery in Vancouver have experienced that first-hand over the past three weeks.

On Dec. 27, 2018, a customer posted an Instagram video that showed her allegedly finding a dead rat in a bowl of Manhattan clam chowder from Crab Park Chowdery.

The video blew up, going viral and creating a major debate about its validity.

One thing’s for sure, it hurt the restaurant’s sales so bad that a GoFundMe was even created to help “support the hospitality community members who are being affected.”

The GoFundMe only raised $2,415 of its $10,000 goal and now, three weeks after the rat incident, the restaurant has announced that it’ll be closing its doors for good this weekend.

“All the amazing memories of the last two years will be with us for a lifetime,” said an Instagram post from the business, announcing the closure.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we regretfully inform all of our guests, friends and family members that this Sunday, Jan. 20 will be our last day in business.”

The post thanked everyone for the love, support and well wishes over the past two years and especially over recent weeks.

It talked about the restaurants efforts in the community and having built a brand they were all very proud to be involved with.

Life is a funny journey, it has all sorts of ups and downs. We know that with our heads held high and a can do attitude the next chapter will be an even better one,” the post said.

“We will see you all real soon. You can truly accomplish anything with a little courage and support from your friends.”

The news has been met with lots of love on social media and even more questions about the validity of the Instagram video that inevitably sunk the popular Vancouver business.
