One of two riders from the Cops for Cancer Tour de North hit by a vehicle while on a training ride in Prince George earlier this week has sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The Prince George RCMP and Canadian Cancer Society confirmed this morning that Shane Kelly, the community rider involved in Monday’s hit and run, died in hospital on Thursday.
“We are all heartbroken by this news,” said Laura Nelson, manager of Cops for Cancer.
Nelson called Kelly a “caring and enthusiastic team builder” who offered comradery, encouragement and support to the entire Tour de North team.
He previously supported other Canadian Cancer Society fundraising events like the Relay for Life, as well as Wheeling Warriors, Tour de Cure and more through other cancer-related charities.
“He was driven by a deep commitment to making a difference for children with cancer,” she added. “Shane’s teammates are devastated by the loss of one of their own, in such tragic circumstances.”
Kelly and another rider from the Tour de North team, who police confirmed was a member of the RCMP, were struck while riding in Prince George around 9 am on Monday.
The other rider was hospitalized with serious injuries as well, but police have not provided an update on their condition.
The suspect in Monday’s hit and run was arrested by officers a short-time later and the investigation into the now-fatal incident is ongoing.
Police continue to seek out witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have relevant video footage of the suspect vehicle, a newer-model, black Dodge Ram 1500, from that morning.
Anyone who thinks they can help investigators with this probe is urged to contact the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300.
Meanwhile, Prince George RCMP media relations officer, Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, says Kelly’s family is grieving privately and has requested space during this difficult time.
“If you would like to share your condolences or well-wishes, they can be brought to the Prince George RCMP Detachment at 455 Victoria St.,” she said.
“Messages will be gathered and passed along to the family when they are ready to receive them. Your kindness and support are greatly appreciated.”
