8-hour Coquihalla closure planned for this weekend

Motorists are being advised of a planned closure for the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) this weekend.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the major route’s northbound lanes will be shut down at Snowshed Hill between midnight and 8 am on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The eight-hour closure on Hwy 5 is for paving, but the full closure is being implemented so crews from the Dawson Group can make important repairs at the same time.

The Ministry explains that there is a “deteriorating seam between the slow and middle lanes” just north of the Great Bear Snow Shed.

“This has been causing water to pool during rain, leading to hydroplaning and heavy spray, and creating safety risks for drivers,” a statement from the Ministry noted. “The repairs will help prevent further damage and improve safety before winter.”

While the southbound lanes will remain open during Saturday morning’s closure, Hwy 5 northbound will be closed at Othello Road (Exit 183).

Emergency-vehicle access will be maintained, but drivers are encouraged to plan an alternative route or adjust travel times to avoid the closure.
