BC Interior highway alert issued with ‘messy road conditions’ expected

A weather alert has been issued for Hwy 3 through the Kootenays.

Environment Canada warns for snow, moderate rain and rising freezing levels over the course of the day.

The weather agency says the result will be “messy road conditions” on the highway route as rain falls on snow.

Motorists are being warned about potential “water pooling and localized flooding due to moderate rainfall accumulation and snow melting.”

The two-day weather system will see the snow level rise to 1,700 metres this morning, 2,000 metres by this afternoon and all the way up to 2,500-3,000 metres by midweek.

Environment Canada is also warning West Kootenay residents about incoming rainfall, with 20-30 millimetres expected in the region by tonight.

As always, you can check DriveBC for the latest information on highway conditions and closures before hitting the road.
