Special weather statements have been in place for several BC Interior highways for much of the weekend and it looks like they will remain until at least Tuesday.
The affected areas include the Okanagan Connector (Merritt to Kelowna), Hwy 3 (Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass), Coquihalla Highway (Hope to Merritt and Merritt to Kamloops), and Hwy 3 (Princeton via Allison Pass).
According to Environment Canada, the warnings are for wet snow near the summits of the above-mentioned highways.
“A Pacific front is approaching the southwestern BC Interior this morning. Wet snow is expected over the highway summits as snow levels will be near 1200 metres initially,” stated Environment Canada.
“Snowfall accumulations from trace to (five centimetres) are expected this morning. As snow level rises to above the summits this afternoon, snow will then change to rain, but wet snow may return tonight as snow level falls again.”
Wet snow is expected on the Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass this afternoon, with additional amounts of more than five centimetres possible on Tuesday.
“Please be prepared to adjust your driving as weather conditions at high elevations may change quickly,” added Environment Canada.
“Slow down and maintain a safe following distance.”
