(UPDATE: March 20 @ 7 pm) - Hwy 1 has reopened between Revelstoke and Golden.
Travellers will certainly hope it's open for the weekend now after a week full of lengthy avalanche control closures.
Between Monday and Friday nights, the major route through Rogers Pass was shut down for over 65 total hours.
(UPDATE: March 20 @ 12:15 pm) - The latest estimate from DriveBC says Hwy 1 could reopen between Revelstoke and Golden at 6 pm Friday, a slight improvement over the initial 8 pm projection.
Parks Canada says forecasters "continue to observe large avalanche activity and are working around the clock to restore safe driving conditions."
There was a brief overnight opening of Hwy 1 between Thursday and Friday, but the 6 pm estimate for traffic to hit the highway is not a guarantee.
Parks Canada notes that "conditions remain dynamic and can change quickly.
"The scale of this avalanche cycle is beyond what has been observed in recent years," a Parks Canada social media post explains.
"We appreciate the public's understanding of this situation - safety of the public and our teams remains our top priority."

(UPDATE: March 19 @ 1:15 pm) - The avalanche control closure of Hwy 1 between Revelstoke and Golden continues to be dynamic.
The major route has been closed more than open this week and that trend is continuing today, as it shut down around 6 am for more work.
It was initially expected to reopen at 8 pm tonight, but DriveBC has provided a new estimate of 8 pm Friday night.

It's expected to be a full-day closure, as DriveBC predicts the road will be reopened at 8 pm PDT.
There is no detour available.
(UPDATE: March 18 @ 1:05 pm) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) has reopened between Revelstoke and Golden.
However, DriveBC clarifies that the major route is open "for the time being," and "unplanned closures are likely due to a high avalanche hazard."
The highway was shut down for 23 hours as crews performed avalanche control work, which came after a 14-hour closure between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Parks Canada detailed that crews saw “a large natural avalanche cycle” during their overnight work along Hwy 1.
Those slides were measured up to size four on a one-to-five scale, which are powerful enough to destroy a railway car, large truck, several buildings or forested area up to four hectares.
(Original story: March 18 @ 10:50 am) - The Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) remains shut down between Revelstoke and Golden today.
After a 14-hour closure for avalanche control between Monday night and Tuesday morning, the major route was open for a short time before closing again Tuesday afternoon.
Both DriveBC and Parks Canada said at the time that Hwy 1 was not expected to reopen until Thursday, which is uncharacteristically long for an avalanche control closure.
However, that projection has since changed, with DriveBC noting in an update shortly before 11 am that the new estimated time for the highway to reopen, which is subject to change, is 1 pm PT today.
⛔️#BCHwy1 - The highway remains closed between #Revelstoke and #GoldenBC for avalanche control work. The estimated time of reopening is 1pm PDT today. This opening is subject to change. Unplanned closures can be expected once the highway reopens. Next update at 1pm. @511Alberta…

Parks Canada surely noticed the shocked reactions to the announced closure, so provided some clarity through a social media post this morning.
According to the post, crews saw “a large natural avalanche cycle” along Hwy 1 between Revelstoke and Golden between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
The avalanche control work triggered slides up to size four on a one-to-five scale, which are powerful enough to destroy a railway car, large truck, several buildings or forested area up to four hectares.
“Every attempt is made to minimize closure durations; however, many contributing factors such as wind, temperature, and significant rain/snow events remain outside our control,” the post explained.
“If possible, the highway will be reopened temporarily between storm events and avalanche control but this is not guaranteed. Safety is the top priority.”
DriveBC will provide its next update at 1 pm and travellers will be anxiously waiting to hear whether Hwy 1 will reopen at that time.
