The Saturday evening crash that closed part of the Coquihalla highway for several hours claimed the life of one person and injured several others, according to police.
Just before 4 pm, Merritt RCMP officers responded to a “serious single motor vehicle incident” on Hwy 5 north of Juliet Road.
A four-door sedan carrying five people was travelling northbound and had gone off the road at a “high rate of speed,” eventually rolling before coming to a stop.
Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, one of the vehicle's occupants was declared deceased at the scene. The four others were taken to hospital.
“Merritt RCMP are actively investigating the cause of the incident and have engaged the services of the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (CARS) to assist,” stated a press release.
“Officers believe speed was a factor in the collision and have ruled out impairment as a factor.”
Photos posted online show numerous first responders responded to the scene, including ambulances, helicopters and police.
The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours before reopening overnight.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those involved in this serious incident,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, RCMP spokesperson.
“Our officers are continuing our investigation and request anyone who has not spoken with police to contact the Merritt RCMP Detachment, as well, if you have any dash camera footage in the area around the time of the incident please call us at 250-378-4262 and quote file 2024-5285.”
