Pacific Coastal doubling up on Kelowna-Comox flights for the summer

Kelowna loves Comox.

And, vice versa.

So, Pacific Coastal Airlines is doubling up on flights between the biggest city in the Okanagan and mid-Vancouver Island, by adding a second daily service for the busy summer season starting July 1.

"Kelowna-Comox continues to exceed our expectations with sustained demand from both leisure and local travellers," said Pacific Coastal director of commercial planning Berkan Kucukkatipoglu.

"Adding a second daily frequency just before the busy summer season allows us to better support this demand, provide greater flexibility for customers and further strengthen essential regional connectivity across British Columbia. Our intention is to maintain the additional frequency at some capacity during the fall and winter seasons as well."

Pacific Coastal is touting the second daily flight with a 15% off regular fares special if you book between now and June 1 for travel between July 7 and Sept. 2 using the promotional code YQQYLW15.

A quick look online shows one-way flights between Kelowna and Comox regularly start at $184.

Visiting friends and relatives is likely the biggest two-way customer base for Kelowna-Comox, followed by tourism and maybe some travel for business.

Tourists from the Okanagan may head to Comox, the gateway to mid-island fun, for ocean beaches, mountain biking and hiking through a rainforest, paddling in a glacier-fed lake, fishing for salmon or some year-round golf.

Tourists from Comox may be seeking in Kelowna wine, semi-arid hiking and biking, beaches and watersports on Okanagan Lake and championship golf.

That's not a big plane or a lot of passengers, but it's the right size for the demand and a second daily flight.

Currently, the daily flights leave Kelowna at 9:45 am to arrive in Comox at 11 am.

From Sunday through Friday, the service departs Comox at 4:35 pm to land in Kelowna at 5:45 pm.

On Saturdays the Comox-Kelowna flight runs 3:50 pm to 5 pm.

The second flight added July 1 to Sept. 5 will actually be six days a week, Sundays through Fridays, with Comox to Kelowna (11:35 am to 12:45 pm) and Kelowna to Comox (1:10 pm to 2:25 pm).

From Vancouver it also flies to Campbell River, Tofino, Powell River, Bella Bella, Bella Coola, Masset, Quesnel, Williams Lake and Anahim Lake.

Overall, Kelowna International Airport is a busy hub serving the entire Southern Interior.
