Washington’s first alpine coaster is opening in Leavenworth, a short trip from the Osoyoos border

Leavenworth has long been a popular tourist spot for people who live in the Southern Interior of British Columbia.

The Bavarian-styled village in the Cascade Mountains, around a three hour drive from Osoyoos, is home to Alpine-style buildings with plenty of restaurants serving German beer and food.

And as you might expect after hearing that, it’s home to a large Oktoberfest that is held over three weekends in the fall.

Now, there’s an exciting new reason for tourists to visit Leavenworth and it’s a little more family-friendly than Oktoberfest.

The brand new Leavenworth Adventure Park is set to open to the public on June 1 at the entrance to Tumwater Canyon, just a short walk away from the village’s downtown core.

“Bringing joy and fun to kids of all ages in a safe and friendly environment is the mission of our park,” says Dave Moffett, the park’s lead developer. “With more than 3 million visitors per year, the Bavarian town of Leavenworth is the perfect place to be.”

Leavenworth Adventure Park will be home to Washington State’s first alpine coaster, called the Tumwater Twister.

Riders in individual toboggans, which can carry one or two people, will begin and end the ride in the same spot, as it starts with a steep ascent to the top of the mountain.

From there, they will descend 234 feet while taking in gorgeous views of the surrounding area with the ability to choose their own speed for the most enjoyable experience, with a top speed of 27 mph.

The coaster track, built on cliffs and steep hills, is 2,700 feet long and up to 35 feet off the ground in sections.

For those a little hesitant to try such a ride, the Wiegand toboggan safety features comply with all the most technical requirements.

That includes tamper-proof lockable safety belts, stainless steel anti-derailment system, short stroke brake levers and an intelligent distance control assist system so riders will keep their distance from each other.

“What makes this coaster so thrilling is definitely the three 360° helix circle turns and the incredible views,” Moffett adds.

The alpine coaster may be the headline attraction, but Leavenworth Adventure Park will offer plenty more for the whole family.

There’s also a 27-foot climbing wall, bungee bounce trampoline and mining sluice for the kids to enjoy.

Admission to Leavenworth Adventure Park is free and guests only have to pay for the attractions as they use them. The park will operate year-round in rain, snow or shine.
