Off-leash dog 'lured' and killed by wolves in BC community

The BC Conservation Officer Service is warning residents in the Ucluelet area about increased wolf activity following the death of a dog this morning.

“Earlier today, an off-leash dog was lured by wolves in a well-used walking area and killed,” the BCCOS explained in a social media statement.

“This incident highlights the real and immediate risk to pets, and potential safety concerns for the public.”

Conservation officers will be working with local officials in the area, including the District of Ucluelet and the RCMP, to investigate the tragic incident.

“Wolves are intelligent predators and may use tactics such as luring domestic animals,” noted the BCCOS post.

“They can travel large distances in search of prey and typically avoid urban environments, but this behaviour can change.”

The BCCOS offered up the following tips for the safety of residents and their pets:

  • Keep dogs on a leash at all times
  • Avoid walking pets in and around the proposed Wyndansea Resort Area
  • Stay on well-travelled paths and remain alert
  • Do not allow pets to roam or run ahead
  • Carry deterrents (e.g., noise makers) where appropriate

Aggressive or concerning wildlife behaviour can be reported to the BCCOS RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
