Spill response protocols enacted after potential sewage spill in Sooke waterways

Traffic delays are expected due to emergency sewer repair work in Sooke.

The work is being done on the south end of the Phillips Road bridge, and is expected to continue throughout the day.

Single-lane alternating traffic is in place to maintain traffic flow while work is being completed.

The District of Sooke says that, due to the location, some sewage may have entered DeMamiel Creek and Sooke River.

The District’s Spill Response Protocol has been enacted, and Provincial authorities and the T’Sou-ke Nation have been notified.

Sooke Fire has responded with absorbent pads to limit any potential spill into the waterways.

Fecal coliform testing will begin shortly and continue for several days to determine what environmental impacts, if any, have occurred.
