There were likely more than a few treats for police dog Phantom on Thursday before tracking down a suspect before the sun even rose.
Phantom and several North Okanagan RCMP officers responded to a call shortly before 4 am after three people allegedly stole from a residence in the 1000 block of 11th Avenue in Vernon.
Two of the suspects were arrested quickly and without incident, but the third made a run for it and fled from officers on foot.
That’s when Phantom sprang into action and tracked the man down in his hiding spot, helping to bring him into custody with his alleged accomplices.
According to police, the three suspects are believed to be linked to a recent string of property offences in the area, which includes auto theft and breaking into community mailboxes.
Cst. Chris Terleski from the North Okanagan RCMP says officers will continue to combat property crime, but they need the public’s help.
“Lock and remove all valuables from your vehicle and never leave a spare key inside,” he asked. “Put away tools, bikes and other valuables and make sure doors, windows, sheds and other outbuildings are locked and secure.”
Terleski also urged people to look out for their neighbours and report any suspicious activity to police immediately so officers can investigate it.
In this case, all three suspects have been released from custody with court appearances scheduled for future dates.
Multiple investigators are underway regarding their alleged illicit activity and the results of that probe will be forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service for a full charge assessment once complete.
