UPDATE: Young Vernon girl succumbs to injuries after being hit by truck in July

(UPDATE: Aug. 17 @ 10:00 am) - Nearly a month after being struck by a vehicle and airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital, 15-year-old Lynza Henke of Vernon has passed away.

"We loved the 15 years we had with Lynza. She has gone to heaven and we will miss her so much,” reads a social media post from her family.

“We are thankful for the prayers of many and the thoughts and kindness of so many. There will be a funeral which everyone is welcome to.”

An online fundraiser created by a family friend to support the family during this turbulent time has raised more than $45,000 since July.

The fundraiser also provided updates on Lynza’s recovery, with an update from Aug. 11 stating Lynza tried to breathe on her own, but was placed back on life support and remained in the ICU.

The details of the funeral will be made shortly.

(Original story: July. 25 @ 11:30 am) -Community members have raised nearly $30,000 to support the family of a young Vernon girl who was hit by a pickup truck while crossing the street last weekend.

Lynza Henke was struck by the truck while crossing 32nd Street at 30th Avenue shortly after noon on Saturday.

According to her mother Lynella, Lynza was going to FreshCo to buy raisins for the fudge she was making.

Lynella added that her daughter was hit by a Ford F150 while crossing the road, with others, in a marked crosswalk that was displaying the walk signal at the time.

The young girl was immediately airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver and had surgery later on Saturday to put a tube in her brain, Lynella explained in a social media update.

Unfortunately, the pressure on her brain continued to increase and she received another surgery Monday to remove a piece of her skull to ease pressure on her brain.

Lynella’s most-recent update, posted late Wednesday night, says Lynza remains on life support at BC Children’s Hospital as the family “patiently waits.”

A fundraiser started on GiveSendGo by Katie Anne Gordon has raised just under $29,000 as of this morning.

The RCMP has not provided any further information on the incident but said in a written statement Monday that the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.
