Kelowna businesswoman and former MLA Renee Merrifield has once again launched a withering attack on Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party.
Speaking to NowMedia video host Jim Csek for the last Beyond the Ballot episode of the year, she said that if the party and its erstwhile allies in the NDP “actually care about the Canadian people,” they’ll force an election as soon as they can.
If Canada has to wait until October, when an election is mandated, then those responsible would have “literally paralyzed our country” in its struggle with incoming US president Donald Trump.
Her remarks come as Trudeau is under severe pressure to resign amid disastrous polling and upheaval within his own party.
The ex-BC United/BC Liberal MLA, who represented Kelowna–Mission, had plenty of harsh words for the prime minister, saying his “ego knows no bounds” as he “takes a family vacation on the dollar of the taxpayer” while clinging onto power.
She also condemned him as “so arrogant” and said his own MPs “want him to go away.”
But she added: “I think he's going to go. He'll drag it out and make it painful for us.”
The longer the Liberal government continues, however, the further into the “danger zone” the country will go.
“I think that we need to really give our head a shake,” she said. “I'm hearing that some of the pundits from the Hill are actually saying that [the Liberals are] going to prorogue government, that they'll go into a leadership run, and then we're not going to have an election till October.
“That is very, very dangerous for Canadians with a Trump administration that's going to take power January 20.”
She added that Trump would “have his way with Canada” in that scenario, adding: “We're going to continue to see our dollar decline. We're going to continue to see businesses make decisions to leave Canada. And that is a huge thing.”
In her conversation with Csek, Merrifield also discussed:
That Trump “would take us over tomorrow,” but the American people cherish democracy and would prevent it
That “all of a sudden” friends and family are asking: “Well, do we want to become part of the United States?”
Trump’s status as a “very dangerous” leader who can “really seed that doubt within people very quickly”
Danielle Smith, whom she praised as “thoughtful” in contrast to the “absent” David Eby
The fact Canada “should be the absolute darling of business” due to its “huge natural resources”
The “disgusting” way in which Trudeau “controls the press”
John Rustad’s lack of a “blueprint” and the “very little” being done by the BC Conservatives
