Kelowna is gearing up to celebrate International Yoga Day with a special event at Trinity Church this Saturday, June 22. The event, organized by the Heartfulness Institute, aims to promote holistic health through yoga and meditation practices.
Elizabeth Denley, a long-time practitioner of Heartfulness Yoga, shared her journey and the benefits of yoga during an interview with KelownaNow. "Yoga has given me tools to manage my inner being," Denley said. "It's like maintaining physical hygiene; if we don't look after our bodies and minds, they accumulate negativity and heaviness."
The event promises to be inclusive and accessible, emphasizing that yoga and meditation do not require any special qualifications or significant financial investment. "Our practices are always free," Denley highlighted. "We believe that something as valuable as spirituality should be available to everyone."
Heartfulness Yoga focuses on relaxation, meditation, and mental well-being. Beginners are welcome to join classes, and options such as chair yoga are available for those who may not be physically fit. Denley explained, "We start with simple relaxation practices to prepare the body for meditation, helping individuals connect with their center and find deeper parts of their being."
Devinder Virk, one of the event organizers, emphasized the importance of making spirituality accessible to all. "Heartfulness practices offer a way to find inner peace and clarity," he said. "Our sessions are free, and we provide both in-person and online options to accommodate everyone."
The event on June 22 will run from 11 am until 1 pm, with pre-registration available on the Heartfulness website. Participants can also register on the day of the event, but spots are limited to 150 attendees. The event will feature guest appearances by Member of Parliament Tracy Gray and Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas.
In addition to yoga and meditation sessions, the event will also emphasize community harmony and holistic health. "We aim to bring unity, integrity, and betterment to our community through these practices," Devinder added.
KelownaNow will live stream the event for those unable to attend in person, ensuring everyone can participate in this celebration of mind, body, and spirit.
