Fiona Read said the rough arrest of nursing student Mona Wang at UBCO, brought back traumatizing memories, so it was very difficult for her to even look at the publicized surveillance video.
Read is the second woman to file a lawsuit accusing Kelowna RCMP Cpl. Lacey Browning of assault.
"It took me a week before I could watch it," said Read. "I was just in tears for her."
Read is suing Browning and the RCMP over an encounter with the constable four years ago.
She says she approached Browning after a New Year’s party looking for help. Instead, she claims Browning took her "face-first" to the pavement and bashed her head repeatedly.
"She was holding onto the hair on the back of my head and pounding the front of my forehead into the road," Said Read. "I was just in shock that this would happen so quickly."
Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoiet said Friday that the RCMP is reviewing Read's allegations "to determine if there are any other actions that need to be taken."
Contacted today, RCMP Communications Officer Cpl. Chris Manseau said the RCMP process, when there is a criminal investigation into a member, is to let that process run its course before acting internally.
So the incident described by Fiona Read would be dealt with separately. Complaints against the police can be dealt with in a variety of ways, from an informal discussion with superiors to an official complaint through the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission, to a criminal police investigation. Read said her complaint was simply rejected when she contacted a Sgt. to make her complaint. "He said 'nope'," recalled Read in an interview with KelownaNow and CTV Vancouver. "The story that we have, as the police, is the truth."
The allegations against Constable Browning in relation to the incident involving Mona Wang were investigated by the RCMP which then turned the investigation over to the Abbotsford Police to review. It will be up to the BC Prosecution Service to decide what charges, if any, should be laid against her.
Fiona Read said she feels the psychological effects of the encounter still, "I just see a police vehicle and I start panicking," she said in the interview.
The RCMP have not responded to Read's allegations or her statement of claim and none of the allegations have been proven in court.
