UPDATE: Water quality advisory rescinded for West Kelowna Estates

(Update: July 30): In consultation with the Interior Health Authority, the City of West Kelowna has rescinded the Water Quality Advisory for the West Kelowna Estates System.

No remaining water quality advisories are in effect in the City of West Kelowna’s systems at this time.

The City of West Kelowna advises the public of changes in water quality through its website and web subscription service.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for e-notifications through the City’s website at www.westkelownacity.ca/subscribe to receive an automatic email advising when any notices are put in place or rescinded.

As no remaining water quality advisories are in place, the City has stopped free access at the bulk filling station at Shannon Lake and Asquith Roads.

(Original Story: July 13): The West Kelowna Estates community has been issued a water quality advisory by the City of West Kelowna and Interior Health.

According to a release delivered by the city on Saturday, increased turbidity at the Okanagan Lake intake has caused the West Kelowna Estates water system to be considered a risk to some residents.

Interior Health says that turbidity refers to the clarity of water and occurs when "fine suspended particles of clay, silt, organic and inorganic matter, plankton and other microscopic organisms are picked up by water."

Those who may be affected by the increased turbidity — including children, elderly, and people with weakened immune systems — are advised to take precautions when using the water.

The City of West Kelowna suggests those people who may be affected should use boiled water, or an alternate source of water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, preparing food, making beverages and ice or mixing baby formula.

For more information about active water advisories in the area visit the Interior Health advisory map, or the City of West Kelowna alerts.
