Ellison Provincial Park will be the site of wildfire mitigation work this spring.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says a prescribed burn within the park just southwest of Vernon will begin as early as Tuesday, March 18.
It will cover up to 7.6 hectares.
“Smoke may be visible from Vernon, Okanagan Indian Band, Lake Country and surrounding areas,” explains a BCWS release.
As always, the exact timing of the wildfire mitigation work will depend on weather and site conditions.
“Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days,” the BCWS release adds.
This year’s work in Ellison Provincial Park is part of a long-term Wildfire Risk Reduction project that aims to remove forest fuels to reduce potential wildfire risk and intensity.
