If you’re heading out into the woods over the Labour Day long weekend, feel free to amplify the experience with a campfire.
However, the BC Wildfire Service is urging the public to “remain vigilant and follow all regulations” even as the wildfire risk decreases post-August.
After the campfire ban was lifted for the Southeast Fire Centre at noon on Tuesday, the BCWS announced that the same will happen for the Kamloops Fire Centre at noon on Thursday.
The Kamloops Fire Centre is made up of the Penticton, Vernon, Merritt, Kamloops and Lillooet fire zones.
Other items that become permitted with the lifting of a Category 1 campfire ban include sky lanterns and wood-fired devices like hot tubs and pizza ovens.
While these items and campfires will be permitted moving forward, any open burning beyond 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres remains banned throughout the province with the exception of the Northwest Fire Centre.
Anyone caught in contravention of an active fire ban is subject to a $1,150 fine, with more significant punishments also possible for more serious offences.
The campfire bans were originally implemented for the Kamloops Fire Centre on July 10 and the Southeast Fire Centre on July 23.
