Smoke Alert: A guide to changing your furnace filter

With the ongoing wildfire fire event wreaking havoc on our air quality, it’s more essential than ever to ensure the air inside your home remains as clean as possible.

It could also save your system from freezing up.

One simple, yet crucial step homeowners can take is changing the furnace filter.

Here's a high-level guide to help you navigate this task:

1. Safety first:

  • Power down: Before touching your furnace or its filter, always ensure the power is turned off. This not only prevents any accidental startups but ensures your safety throughout the process.

2. Determine the filter size:

  • Check the existing filter: The dimensions are typically printed on the side of the filter. Jot these down.
  • Manual: If you can't find the size on the filter, refer to the furnace’s owner's manual. If you’ve misplaced it, a quick online search with your furnace’s model number should help. In this case, a 16x25x2 filter was not available and we substituted with a 1 inch thick filter instead.

3. Purchase the right filter:

  • Higher MERV rating: Given the increased pollutants in the air due to the fires, consider purchasing a filter with a higher MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating. This will be more effective at capturing smaller particles. But ensure it's still within the recommended range for your furnace.
  • Stock up: With prolonged poor air quality, filters might need to be changed more frequently. Having a few extra on hand can be beneficial.Pro tip: the tighter the folds, the easier it is for soot and dirt to build up and block airflow. We selected a less rigid one here.

4. Changing the filter:

  • Locate and open the furnace panel: This is typically found on the furnace’s side. Some might have knobs or latches, while others might simply pop off.
  • Slide out the old filter: Pay attention to the direction arrows on the filter's frame. This shows the correct airflow direction and will be important when placing the new filter.
  • Insert the new filter: Using the arrows as a guide, slide the new filter into place.
  • Secure the panel: Once the filter is snugly fitted, ensure you securely replace the furnace panel.

5. Tips, tricks, and precautions:

  • Document the date: Mark the date on the filter's frame or keep a log. This helps you track how often you’re changing it, especially if it’s more frequent due to the smoke.
  • Regular checks: During heavy smoke events, check the filter every couple of weeks. A clogged filter can make your furnace work harder and reduce its efficiency.
  • Avoid cheap fibreglass filters: While they're less expensive, these filters aren't as effective at trapping smaller particles present in smoke.

6. Dispose of the old filter:

  • Seal the old filter in a plastic bag before disposing of it to contain any contaminants.

Remember, changing your furnace filter is only one aspect of keeping your indoor environment clean.

Consider pairing this with other measures like using air purifiers and keeping windows and doors sealed.

Stay safe, and breathe easy.
