Rockets finish up shortened season with win over Royals

The Kelowna Rockets were able to put Monday’s 10-2 loss in the rear-view mirror and finish their season with a hard-fought win over the Victoria Royals on Wednesday.

Kelowna outshot Victoria 38-30 en route to a 3-2 win at Prospera Place.

Alex Swetlikoff opened the scoring 6:45 into the first period before Noah Dorey extended the lead with his first career WHL goal.

Dorey is just the latest in a long list of Rockets who scored their first goals in the league this year, signalling that the future is very bright in Kelowna.

Victoria got a goal from Ty Yoder just 30 seconds later, however, which cut the lead in half.

Jake Lee restored Kelowna’s two-goal lead in the second period and that’s how things would stay until the final minute of play.

With just 46 seconds left in the game, Brayden Tracey brought the Royals to within one with his ninth of the season, but that’s as close as they would come.

Roman Basran made 28 saves to secure the win, while Adam Evanoff made an impressive 35 saves in a losing effort for Victoria.

Although expectations were low for the Rockets this season after loading up for the 2020 Memorial Cup that never happened, the team impressed in every fashion.

Despite being sidelined for more than two weeks because of a COVID-19 outbreak, the Rockets finished the season 10-5-1, good enough for second in the BC Division behind the Kamloops Blazers.
