Record-breaking warmth continues across BC

Unseasonably warm weather continued across British Columbia on Thursday, with daily high temperature records set or tied in at least seventeen communities, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The warmth was driven by a persistent ridge of high pressure that has remained in place over the province for much of the week, allowing mild air to spread across coastal, interior, and northern regions.

The following communities set or tied daily maximum temperature records on Feb. 5:

  • Abbotsford – 16.4 °C, breaking the 1984 record of 15.1 °C

  • Agassiz – 16.1 °C, surpassing the 1984 record of 14.0 °C

  • Bella Bella – 14.2 °C, edging past the 1993 record of 14.0 °C

  • Bella Coola – 12.9 °C, breaking the 2010 record of 10.7 °C

  • Campbell River – 14.7 °C, exceeding the 2015 record of 12.2 °C

  • Chetwynd – 10.7 °C, above the 1984 record of 10.0 °C

  • Duncan (North Cowichan) – 14.1 °C, surpassing the 1934 record of 13.3 °C

  • Esquimalt (Victoria Gonzales) – 13.4 °C, breaking the 1963 record of 13.3 °C

  • Hope – 12.8 °C, exceeding the 1941 record of 12.2 °C

  • Mackenzie – 9.1 °C, surpassing the 2022 record of 6.3 °C

  • Nanaimo – 13.0 °C, breaking the 2015 record of 12.4 °C

  • Pitt Meadows – 14.4 °C, tying the 1941 record

  • Prince George – 11.7 °C, exceeding the 1961 record of 10.0 °C

  • Puntzi Mountain – 10.6 °C, breaking the 1961 record of 9.5 °C

  • Sparwood – 12.6 °C, surpassing the 2009 record of 9.3 °C

  • Squamish – 15.1 °C, breaking the 1984 record of 13.3 °C

  • Victoria International Airport – 13.9 °C, exceeding the 1987 record of 12.6 °C

Environment Canada noted that the temperature records were derived from a selection of historical weather stations active during each area’s period of record. The data remains preliminary and subject to verification.

The stretch of record-setting temperatures follows a similar pattern observed across the province on Feb. 4, marking consecutive days of unusually mild February weather.
