A thunderstorm rolled through parts of the Okanagan late Wednesday night.
Environment Canada (EC) says it could happen again this afternoon and evening, as a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the region.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the alert reads.
The hourly forecast from EC indicates that the stormy weather could begin as early as 3 pm and last until late in the evening.
Along with potential thunder and lightning, EC predicts a 60% chance of showers that will continue past midnight.
The wind forecast is different in each part of the Okanagan.
Kelowna is expected to get southwesterly winds of 40 km/h with gusts up to 70 km/h. Northerly winds of 30 km/h with gusts up to 60 km/h are forecast in Penticton. The wind situation is predicted to be calmer in Vernon.
“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” the weather alert added. “When thunder roars, go indoors!”
The severe thunderstorm watch also covers large portions of the Kootenays.
