(UPDATE: Dec. 6 @ 1:45 pm) – Environment Canada has now issued snowfall warnings for the Coquihalla (Hwy 5 ) and Highway 3 through the western Kootenays.
The Coquihalla could see 15-25 centimetres of snow between Hope and Merritt.
Meanwhile, Hwy 3 could see up to 15 cm from the Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.
According to the forecast, the snow will begin Saturday afternoon and last into Sunday afternoon for Hwy 5 while the snow is expected to taper off by Sunday morning on Hwy 3.
Anyone travelling those sections of either highway is advised to use extra caution.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” the forecast says.
“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”
(Original story: Dec. 6 @ 7 am) – A winter storm warning has been issued for the Trans-Canada Highway.
Environment Canada said its warning applies to the road between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass.
The storm is expected this evening, lasting till Saturday evening. Up to 30 centimetres of snow is anticipated.
Environment Canada said “hazardous” weather is expected, including reduced visibility and “changeable driving conditions.”
In a public notice, the forecaster added: “A Pacific frontal system will bring snowfall to parts of BC central interior this evening to Saturday with accumulations ranging from 20 to 30 cm.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”
