The City of Humboldt will pause to remember one of the heartbreaking tragedy in its history as April 6 marks eight years since the 2017–18 Humboldt Broncos bus crash.
The tragedy claimed 16 lives and forever changed the 13 survivors, their families and the entire community. The crash, which occurred in 2018, sent shockwaves across Canada and beyond, prompting an outpouring of support and solidarity.

At its March 23 council meeting, Humboldt city council proclaimed April 6, 2026, as “2017–18 Humboldt Broncos Day.” Mayor Rob Muench is encouraging residents to take a moment at 4:50 p.m. — the approximate time of the crash — to reflect and honour those who died.
The following day, April 7, is also being recognized for its lasting legacy. The city has proclaimed it as a Green Shirt Day, commemorating Logan Boulet, one of the Broncos players who died from his injuries.
Boulet’s decision to become an organ donor sparked what became known as the Logan Boulet effect, a nationwide surge in registrations that saw more than 100,000 Canadians sign up as organ donors in the days after his death.

Mayor Muench is encouraging residents to wear green on April 7 and to have conversations with their families about organ donation, highlighting the life-saving impact of such decisions.
The City of Humboldt is inviting residents to take part in both days of remembrance, reflecting not only on the loss but also on the enduring legacy of compassion, unity and generosity that followed.
