The 2025 results are in and it’s a familiar breed at the top.
For a 32nd consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in Canada.

The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), the organization that releases the official list each year, calls it a testament to the breed’s versatility and long-standing place in Canadian homes.
“Known for its friendly nature, intelligence and versatility, the Labrador Retriever continues to excel as a family companion, guide dog, working partner and sporting dog,” a CKC release explains.
“Its adaptability and dependable temperament have helped secure its place at the top of the rankings for more than three decades.”
Labs are also the only “original Canadian dog breed” on the list, the CKC notes, as they descended from dogs taken to Newfoundland by explorers, fishermen and settlers.
Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are close behind on the list, rounding out the top three, while the Poodle unseated the French Bulldog to reclaim the fourth spot it previously held for many years.
The annual rankings are based on national data for CKC-registered purebred dog breeds in Canada.
Bob Whitney, the CKC’s chairman of the board, says the top 10 reflect the diverse roles that purebred dogs play in the lives of Canadians.
“From sporting and herding breeds to devoted companions, these dogs are valued for their temperament, purpose and partnership,” he says.
