Police have confirmed a man is dead following a crash west of Williams Lake on Wednesday night.
However, the victim was not involved in the initial collision.
According to police, the 49-year-old stopped to assist at the scene of an accident on Hwy 20, around 25 kilometres southwest of Williams Lake, shortly after 7 pm.
The crash involved two semis and the RCMP says the good Samaritan was assisting with efforts to extricate one of the drivers who was trapped.
Unfortunately, as that was taking place, the second commercial vehicle became dislodged and fatally struck the man.
Hwy 20 was closed for several hours Wednesday night while emergency personnel managed the scene and conducted an initial investigation.
The broader probe remains ongoing and is being led by Williams Lake RCMP with assistance from the BC Coroners Service and other partner agencies.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or has dash camera footage from the area around the time of the crash, to contact the Williams Lake detachment at 250-392-6211.
