RCMP officers got a lot more than they bargained for when they stopped to help a vehicle stuck in the ditch off Hwy 5.
Police were called to the scene near Blue River around 3:15 am today.
Upon arrival, officers determined that one of two occupants in the vehicle was wanted for murder and potentially armed.
“Out of an abundance of caution, police closed the highway in both directions for both police and public safety,” an RCMP release explained.
Due to the high-risk nature of the situation, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Service were called in to assist with the arrests.
Both occupants of the vehicle were safely arrested shortly before 11 am. The RCMP then confirmed that one individual was wanted for murder and the other was the subject of a Canada-wide warrant for parole violation.
Hwy 5 has been shut down for several hours due to the police incident and Cpl. Brett Urano thanked the public for their patience and cooperation during that time.
